Areca Palm is a low maintenance plant that is mainly grown as an indoor plant but can also be used outdoors in warm climates with protection. In Kuwait, it is best suited for indoor environments because the extreme heat, intense sun, dry air, and salty winds outdoors can stress or damage it unless it is planted in a very well-irrigated, shaded, and sheltered location.
One interesting use of the areca palm is as a natural air-freshening plant, as it is known for improving indoor air quality.
The areca palm can survive for 10 years or more with proper care. Common issues include brown leaf tips caused by low humidity and direct air conditioning.
When grown in pots indoors, it typically reaches about 1.5 to 2.5 meters in height, while outdoor plants in ideal tropical conditions can grow much larger, up to around 6 to 12 meters tall. It grows at a moderate rate, usually about 15 to 25 centimeters per year indoors.
